Oak Ridge Schools is pleased to announce two key leadership appointments that will strengthen instructional excellence and student success across the district.
Dr. Chris Tucker Named Work-Based Learning and Innovation Coordinator
Dr. Chris Tucker, a veteran education leader with over two decades of experience in career and technical education, has been named Work-Based Learning and Innovation Coordinator, effective January 12, 2026. In this role, Dr. Tucker will provide leadership and oversight for district-wide work-based learning initiatives, innovation programs, and Portrait of a Graduate implementation, ensuring high-quality student experiences that connect classroom learning with real-world applications, industry partnerships, and future-ready skill development.
Dr. Tucker brings extensive district-level leadership experience, having served as Curriculum Specialist for Career and Technical Education with Knox County Schools since 2012. In that capacity, he led the expansion of multiple CTE pathways, oversaw federal and local CTE budgets including the Carl Perkins grant, and increased credential attainment and work-based learning opportunities across the district. He also supported the implementation of computer science requirements across Knox County’s 34 middle and high schools. “We’re thrilled to have Dr. Chris Tucker step into this vital role,” said Superintendent Dr. Bruce Borchers. “He brings a proven track record of launching innovative programs and building meaningful partnerships with businesses and postsecondary institutions that align beautifully with our Portrait of a Graduate.”
Chris Layton Named Vice Principal of Jefferson Middle School
Oak Ridge Schools has appointed Chris Layton as Vice Principal of Jefferson Middle School (JMS), effective January 5, 2026. An Oak Ridge native and Oak Ridge High School alumnus, Mr. Layton brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep connection to the community he will serve.
Mr. Layton previously served as Vice Principal of Jefferson from 2016-2020, during which time JMS was recognized as a Reward School in 2018-19. For the last five years, he has served as Assistant Principal of Knox County Virtual School, where he co-founded the district’s virtual learning model that served 20,000 students in its first year and now supports nearly 350 students in grades 4ā12. His innovative leadership in virtual education, combined with his proven track record at Jefferson Middle School, makes him an excellent fit to support JMS students, staff, and families as the school continues its tradition of excellence. “We’re thrilled to welcome Chris back to Jefferson Middle School,” said Superintendent Dr. Bruce Borchers. “We look forward to the innovative ideas and collaborative spirit he brings to our district.”
Both appointments reflect Oak Ridge Schools’ commitment to providing exceptional leadership that supports innovation, student achievement, and community engagement.
