Oak Ridge Schools Launches New Visual Identity

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Oak Ridge School District was born in the shadow of the Manhattan Project in 1943. Like the project that brought together the nation’s greatest minds for a common goal, the school system set the bar high for educational excellence from the beginning.

Now, Oak Ridge Schools’ reputation of excellence and innovation is being reinforced with new brand marks that were launched on Wednesday, July 29, as part of the district’s return to school plan.

“One major goal of this branding project was for us to develop a strong and consistent visual identity that accurately represents the mission and values of Oak Ridge,” said Oak Ridge Schools Supervisor of Career Readiness and Communications, Dr. Holly Cross. “I am grateful to all of the students, staff and community members who contributed to this project. We are excited to see these changes implemented over the months ahead.”

With the help of Rhodes Branding, a K-12 branding agency based out of Columbia, S.C., new visual identity systems were developed for each of the nine schools within the district, as well as the district office.

“This new contemporary identity is a nod to the history and tradition of Oak Ridge Schools, but also clearly defines where the district is today,” said Rhodes Branding president and co-founder, Austin Rhodes. “We’re so thankful to the entire Oak Ridge team for entrusting us with this process and being an amazing partner over the last several months. We wanted to give them the platform to ground some really big leaps forward, and a strong brand is really the foundation for these steps.”

The new logos pay homage to the district’s tradition and what it hopes the future will be: bold, creative, innovative, competitive, fierce, and fiery. The new marks and logos have all of those qualities in each one of them and provide a cohesive system that reflects the unique characteristics of Oak Ridge Schools.

“It’s important to acknowledge the extreme challenges that Oak Ridge Schools and many other districts are currently facing, and we considered delaying the launch of the new brand identity system,” Cross added. “However, we hope these new logos and marks serve as a rallying point for our students, teachers, parents and the entire Oak Ridge community.”
