On Friday, May 18, Willow Brook Elementary School hosted author Linda Sue Park. In 2002, the American Library Association recognized Mrs. Park’s novel A Single Shard< with the prestigious Newbery Medal. She has since written numerous books for children of all ages.

During her presentation, she spoke briefly about her life in the United States as the child of Korean immigrants and shared some of her books with an enthusiastic crowd of students. During the second of her presentation, she spoke about her bestselling novel A Long Walk to Water. Once she had finished her presentation, a group of 7th graders from nearby Robertsville Middle School shared their project based on A Long Walk to Water to the Mrs. Park and the students and staff at Willow Brook. This novel describes the life of Salva Dut, a former “Lost Boy” who came to the US as a refugee and started a non-profit organization called Water for South Sudan. Last year, Robertsville 7th graders raised $3,500 for Salva’s organization and are currently fundraising again this year. WBES donated $30 to this project on Friday. If you are interested in giving to the 7th graders’ project, you can contact Michelle Scott or Becky Davis at RMS.
