Thank you for all who participated in the 2016-2017 3rd-5th grade da Vinci Arts & Science Fair.

The daVinci Arts & Science Fair is a forum to demonstrate the relationships between arts and science and provide a venue for student artists to display their work, competing for awards.

For the science portion:

Each student submits an entry evaluated by a team of judges. The student describes the project and answers accompanying questions. Public display of project entries occurs just prior to the awards ceremony on Sunday.

For each presentation, an abstract is adhered to the front of the display board. Project expectations include the use of the Scientific Method–positing the hypothesis; demonstrating an experiment to test that hypothesis; and an explanation of the outcome of the experiment as it pertains to the hypothesis.

Additionally, each project receives a score for presentation and verbal interview. Students explain how they chose their subject, what research they performed, and how they view the subject after having completed the experiment.

For the art portion:

Juried works selected by judges are featured with a label showing title, artistā€™s name, teacherā€™s name and school, grade, and contact information.Ā Public viewing is held just prior to the Awards Ceremony. All artists, their families, and friends are encouraged and invited to this celebration.Ā Entries include original works in the following categories: Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Ceramics, Digital Photography, Traditional Photography, Computer Graphics, Mixed-Media, and Printmaking.

This yearā€™s winners in the Arts portion:

STEAM

ā€œThis category was included two years ago to show the relationship of the Arts and Sciences, proving that when taught together students have a better understanding of the relationship and SYNERGY of two disciplines taught in our schools.Ā  Our DaVinci fair embodies how the arts and science foster communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity through problem based and project based learningā€.

First Place STEAM

Odelia Kneiser, Dueling Banjos, Sculpture, Linden Elementary, Tristy Berryhill

I welded many different pieces of metal together using science and technology. The designing and planning required engineering, resulting in an artistic sculpture.

Second Place STEAM

Aaron Fiscor, Study of a Knee, Drawing, Woodland Elementary, Mary Katherine Chin

The artwork is inspired by the study of anatomy and proportion. The artist drew from observation a detailed study of a knee joint using value and form.

Third Place STEAM

Gabi Phillips, Gargoyle, Ceramics, Linden Elementary, Tristy Berryhill

Building with clay requires both art and engineering to make sure the work is constructed with craftsmanship and also aesthetic.Ā Ā  We learned about functional and decorative art and how some pieces can be both.Ā  We learned about the functional and decorative purposes of gargoyles of the Middle Ages.Ā  Our clay relief masks were mostly for decorative purpose.Ā  We used crayon and tempera to make the clay appear to be stone-like.
