ORHS Project Receives Awards The newly remodeled Oak Ridge High School has recently received a state award and two national awards for its design and construction. The project has also been featured in the December issue of School Planning & Design. ORHS was recognized with a Citation Award from the American Association of School Administrators and a 2009 Learning by Design Citation of Excellence from the American School Board Journal. The Tennessee School Boards Association selected ORHS as the School of the Year for Excellence in Architectural Design; ORHS earned second place in the Renovation Division. Oak Ridge Schools hosted groundbreaking ceremonies at the soccer field on June 14, 2005. The groundbreaking marked the beginning of the renovation and construction of the high school. The Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation helped to raise over eight million dollars in private donations to help fund the school. This $61 million project was completed during the summer of 2008. A dedication ceremony was held on August 18, the first day of classes for the 2008-2009 school year.

Board of Education During a recent meeting, The Oak Ridge Board of Education elected officers for the 2009-2010 school year. Keys Fillauer will serve as the Chairman of the Board, and Robert Eby will take over as Vice-Chair. Jennifer Richter will become the Parliamentarian. Angi Agle will remain as the Treasurer. Allen Thacker was recently honored as Plant Manager of the Year.

Maintenance Supervisor Wins State Award Allen Thacker, Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations for Oak Ridge Schools, was recently named as Plant Manager of the Year by the Tennessee School Plant Manager’s Association. The award recognizes the maintenance manager whose leadership has made a significant difference within the school system. Thacker has worked for Oak Ridge Schools for ten years and has been Supervisor of Maintenance and Operations for the past three years. He has devoted vast amounts of his time to the system and has made great strides in improving the efficiency of operation, facilities improvement, and energy conservation. His leadership has resulted in a leaner, more productive maintenance department with a total goal that mirrors the system’s motto, “Best Cleaned, Best Maintained."

Dr. Jody Goins has been named as the new principal at Oak Ridge High School.

New ORHS Principal Dr. Jody Goins has been named principal at Oak Ridge High School effective July 1, 2009. He will be replacing Chuck Carringer who resigned to take a leadership position at a local church. Dr. Goins has served as vice principal of ORHS since 2007. Dr. Goins’ career in education began in 2004 as a social studies teacher at ORHS. His coaching career also began in 2004 at ORHS where he was an assistant boys’ basketball coach. In 2006 Dr. Goins was named associate head boys’ basketball coach, assistant athletic director, and social studies teacher at the high school. In 2007 he served as ORHS’s interim vice principal, associate head boys’ basketball coach and assistant athletic director. Read more...

AP Summer Institute for Teachers Oak Ridge High School will again be hosting the Advanced Placement Summer Institute for teachers and administrators from July 27 until July 31. AP courses include Biology, Calculus AB/BC, English Literature & Composition, Environmental Science, European History, Physics B/C, and U.S. History.
