Welcome Students, Parents, Staff, Community and Prospective Patrons to Oak Ridge City Schools.
We believe you will find this site informative and hope that it will help you acquire a snapshot of the quality of the Oak Ridge school district. The story of Oak Ridge City Schools began in July, 1943, not in Oak Ridge, but in New York City when the United States Army interviewed Mr. A. H. Blankenship at Columbia College to be the first leader of Oak Ridge Schools. Today, Oak Ridge City Schools are comprised of a preschool serving 222 students (ages 3-4), four elementary schools serving 1,726 students, two middle schools serving 1,395 students, and one high school serving 1,400 students. With a support staff of 238 and a licensed staff of 411, our 649 employees work hard each day for our students. Eighty-two percent of our teachers hold a masters level degree.
STEM School District
You may have been hearing something about a proposal to make Oak Ridge Schools “the” Premier STEM School District in the country. We have put together a partnership proposal with Discovery Education that would make us just that. Please take a moment to review a joint presentation to the Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation that was made by me and members of the Discovery Education Team in the video below.
Recently, a team of staff from Oak Ridge toured some schools in Charlotte, NC and a smaller group of staff spent the day in Mooresville, NC. I can tell you that we learned a lot about the possibilities and opportunities that we have right here in Oak Ridge while making these visits. What was also confirming for me, as your leader, was the fact that we have some of the best instructional efforts happening right here in our district. I would put our staff up against any of the staff we saw on our visit! So, THANK YOU for your amazing efforts!
This is an exciting time in the Oak Ridge Community, and I look forward to the Oak Ridge Schools being recognized as a national model of how to help all students be successful!”
