A Visual Art and Poetry Competition/Exhibition will commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Historic Oak Ridge School Desegregation by the Oak Ridge/Scarboro 85. The competition theme is “Honoring the Struggle, Celebrating the Triumphs, and Inspiring the Future.” The program is open for students in all grade bands (K-4, 5-8, and 9-12). Entry forms are available now from the art teacher in each school or can be accessed at https://www.ortn.edu/TeacherCenter/2021_Art_and_Poetry_Contest.pdf.

Each student may submit one piece per category: Visual Arts (a single piece of two-dimensional artwork) and Poetry (one original poem in writing). An entry form with parent signature must accompany each submission. The art teacher at each school (or a designee) will accept submissions until the deadline of February 19, 2021.

To celebrate Black History Month, an exhibition of entries will debut at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge with an awards ceremony on March 11, 2021. First, second, and third place winners in each category and grade band will receive a 3D-printed trophy. A single “Best In Show” winner will also be selected from all entries. Submissions will also be shared via the official Instagram account: orsartandpoetrycontest.
