Oak Ridge High School Daily Bulletin

Welcome to this week’s Black History Facts!

Do you like poetry? Phyllis Wheatley was the first African-American to publish a poetry book in 1773.

Do you like hip hop music? Thank Sylvia Robinson because she produced the first commercially successful hip hop record “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugar Hill Gang in 1979.

Did you know that Stevie Wonder was the first African-American to win a Grammy’s Album of the Year? This happened in 1973.

Even if you don’t watch morning shows, you can appreciate Bryant Gumbel. He was the first African-American to host a network morning show in 1981, NBC’s “Today Show”.

Super Bowl weekend is over, but did you know that Fritz Pollard was one of the first two African-American to play in the NFL? This happened in 1920. Pollard went on to become the NFL’s first African-American coach.

Finally, in 1996, Sheryl Swoopes, became the first player to ever sign with the WNBA.

See you for next week’s Black History Facts!
