Oak Ridge High School will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 23-27 to raise awareness and prevent drug use in our school and in the Oak Ridge community. The Oak Ridge City Council recently passed a Proclamation designating the week as Red Ribbon Week throughout the Oak Ridge Community. This is an national event that takes place each October to illustrate a commitment to and support of the continuous fight against drug use. Our theme for the week is “Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free®”.   The ASAP Youth Ambassadors will be selling Red Ribbons to support the effort and there will be information about Red Ribbon Week on the announcements each morning throughout the week! Let’s work together to prevent drug use/abuse at Oak Ridge High School!

DID YOU KNOW – Did you know Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign with over 80 million people participating each year? Red Ribbon Week started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who in 1985 was brutally murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico? After his death, people wanted to honor his sacrifice. Local celebrations began in California – where Camarena grew up – in 1985, and in 1988 the National Family Partnership started the first National Red Ribbon Week. Remember: “Your Future Is Key, So Stay Drug Free®” (M) – J. Laurendine
