77 years ago Hattie McDaniel won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as a slave in Gone With the Wind becoming the first black actor or actress to win an Oscar. She had to receive special permission to attend the awards which were held in a segregated hotel. Last week, a record 6 black actors and actresses were nominated for Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards, led by Denzel Washington with his 7th nomination – a record for a black actor. Without Hattie McDaniel there would be no Denzel Washington. Who will inspire the next generation?
