The Center for Children’s and Young Adult Literature at UTK is sponsoring the 3rd annual African American Read-In. ORHS has been invited to participate and we will be recording students as they read a favorite poem or an excerpt from an African American-authored text (like a speech, a short story, or an essay) on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 7 and 8th, in our very own Wildcat Studio. The videos will be aired on the UTK campus, Friday, Feb. 24th from noon-6pm in Hodges Library. If you are interested, please come by the library for more information, for help picking something to read, and to pick up a permission slip. You MUST have a signed permission slip to participate. 152 years ago a black boy was born into slavery in Diamond, Missouri. After abolition he slept in a barn 10 miles from his home so he could attend the only school in the area that taught black students. He went on to develop techniques to make farming more effective as well as many other scientific innovations. That man was George Washington Carver. 58 years ago, Neil DeGrasse Tyson was born in Manhattan, NY and is now the leading astrophysicist in the country – undoubtedly inspired by Carver and others who came before him. Who will inspire the next generation? Find out at the library as they honor Black History month – Celebrating History, Inspiring the Future. (2/6) – C. Milloway
