OAK RIDGE SCHOOLS 2007-08 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 

National and State Recognition

 

Student Achievement

 

ORHS  Band, Orchestra, and Chorus had a combined total of 57 members selected for All State East and a total of 18 members selected for All State.

ORHS Technology Student Association has ten seniors graduating this year and all placed in the top ten nationally in one or more of the following events: Agriculture and Biotechnology Design, Chapter Orals, Dragster Design, Engineering Design, Manufacturing Prototype, Medical Technology, Technology Bowl and Formula F1 Design.  All of the seniors in this program received the bronze, silver and gold National Achievement Awards.  One senior held the offices of state treasurer, state vice president, state president and national president.  In state competition, two seniors received first place in Technology Bowl Written, one senior placed first in Chapter Written, one senior placed first in Technical Sketching and Applications, four seniors placed first in Manufacturing Prototype, three seniors placed second in Technology Bowl and four seniors placed third in Agriculture and Biotechnology Design.

ORHS Visual Arts students received awards in the following areas:  In the Regional Student Art Exhibit, 4 seniors received prizes and scholarship offers.  In the Doodle for Google Competition, one senior received national recognition.  Four of our seniors have indicated their plans to pursue a career in art; one of whom received a full tuition scholarship to the prestigious Cooper Union Art School in New York City.

ORHS Future Business Leaders of America had three seniors who won first place awards at the 2008 State Leadership Conference.  Four seniors will represent Oak Ridge High School and the state of Tennessee at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Atlanta this summer.  One senior in the Virtual Enterprise program was the United States member of the multinational team winning the Merrill Lynch Global Challenge held in New York City.  Two seniors in VE designed the catalog which won 5th in the world.  Four senior VE members placed 3rd in the Tennessee Business Plan Competition. 

ORHS SECME students continued to serve in leadership roles for the community wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday observance.

For the 44th year, ORHS International Relations Club attended Georgetown University's NAIMUN competition.  For the tenth consecutive year, Oak Ridge High School won an award, taking an outstanding Delegation Honor.  The competition involved 135 schools and over 3,000 delegates.

ORHS Science Bowl teams came in 3rd place at the Tennessee Tech Science Bowl in Cookeville.  The Science Bowl team placed 1st at the DOE Science Bowl.  The team won the division challenge in astronomy. 

The ORHS Science Olympiad team placed 2nd at the State Competition.   They brought home medals in 12 events and placed in the top 6 in 8 events.  One senior placed as a semifinalist for the United States Physics Team.  Teams on which seniors played a significant role claimed second place in the regional finish in the American Association of Physics Teacher's annual Physics Bowl competition. 

In the Chemistry Olympiad, ORHS placed first nationally.  In the Environmental Science Olympiad 2 students were in the top 10. 

Oak Ridge High School earned the honor of being invited and participating in the Invitational Young Physics Tournament.  Physics Bowl participants including seniors placed 1st and 2nd in our region, and a senior scored 2nd highest. 

ORHS excelled in the study of foreign language as evidenced by the following results on the national French, Spanish and German examinations.  French: 1 state award; Spanish 2 state awards; and German: 1 state award.

ORHS Math students competed in the University of Tennessee Pro-2-Serve Mathematics Competition, one senior placed in the top ten finalists thereby winning a Mathematics Department Scholarship to UT. 

On the 2008 American Mathematics Competition exam, 2 ORHS seniors placed in the national top 5%, which gained them advancement to the American Invitational Mathematics Competition. 

On the Tennessee State Mathematics examination, 5 ORHS seniors ranked in the top ten regionally for Calculus and Advanced Topics with 2 of them also ranking in the top ten in East Tennessee.

Five ORHS seniors in Statistics ranked regionally, as well, with 4 ranking in the top ten in East Tennessee. 

Nine ORHS seniors in Math Thesis were chosen as Siemens Math, Science and Technology Semifinalists and 5 seniors advanced to Regional Finalists, this for two team project investigations, one in Carbon Nanowebs and the other in Climate Modeling.

One ORHS senior earned Honorable Mention at the Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium for his research in mathematical modeling.

One ORHS senior placed 3rd in the Southern Appalachian Science and Engineering Fair for his multi-scale approximation studies in climate modeling. 

10 ORHS seniors completed a Math, Science, Computer Science Thesis project with scientific mentors at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

ORHS athletic teams won 66 percent of all the athletic events they entered. 

ORHS teams won 7 regular season district or district tournament titles, 4 Regional and state championships in Boys and Girls Cross Country.  Forty ORHS students were selected as All-District, 53 were named All-Regional, 54 were named all sectional, and 44 students received All-State Honors.

172 ORHS graduates earned a GPA of 3.0 or better. 

Seventy-Four seniors belong to the National Honor Society.

Six members of the ORHS Class of 2008 were named National Merit Finalists, 8 were designated Scholars and 5 National Merit Semifinalists.  Also, 19 students were recognized as commended students.  

Over 170 ORHS students received special awards, scholarships, or other types of recognition with monetary estimates in excess of 7.7 million dollars. 

Ninety-four percent of the ORHS graduates who responded to a recent survey indicated that they will enter a post-secondary school.

Robertsville Middle School Teacher was selected as a recipient of the 2007 Tennessee Association for Childhood Education International Classroom Teacher Excellence Award. (TACEI)

RMS 5th Grade student earned over 800 Accelerated Reader point, setting a school record.

 

RMS 5th grade student placed 1st in the Visual Arts Presidential Fitness Award.

RMS 5th grade student placed 1st in the middle school Math Olympiads.

 

RMS 7th Grade student competed in the Tennessee State Geographic Bee in Nashville, April, 2008

RMS 8th Grade student earned a Certificate of Recognition in the Promising Young Writers program sponsored by NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English). Only nine students in TN earned this honor.

 

At the State Technology Student Association Conference in Pigeon Forge 28 Robertsville Middle School (RMS) students received top ten finishes.

Seven RMS students participated in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition held at UTK.  Robertsville is proud to have two students qualify for the state competition.

7th grade students of Ms. Cain's class submitted poetry that was accepted for publication in the Creative Communication Poetry Contest.  These students also earned Robertsville Middle School a Poetic Achievement Award which is given to schools whose entries

Robertsville Rams Football team won the 2007-08 City Championship and also won the East Tennessee Middle School Championship

Lady Rams Basketball team won the 2007-08 Season; 11-8 overall; 3rd Place in Area 2 District Tournament and Final 12 in East Tennessee Section

Robertsville Boys Basketball team for 2007-2008 season won the TMSAA Area 2 District Tournament and were part of the 2008 TMSAA East Tennessee Sectional Tournament Final Four.

In the 2007-08 National Presidential Fitness Awards, 13 Robertsville Middle School students were Presidential Winners; 104 students were National Award Winners.

Jefferson Middle School (JMS) 8th grade student won a $2,000 scholarship to Watkins College of Art and Design in the East Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition held at the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Jefferson Middle School Technology Student Association team spent four days at the Tennessee Technology Student Association State Conference in Pigeon Forge and a team of 18 competed in 23 events against over 25 other middle school teams from across the state and brought home nine trophies including 5 first place trophies.

Two Jefferson Middle School students were national winners in the French National Exam that was given to approximately 100,000 students in the U.S.

In the Duke University Talent Identification Program, Jefferson Middle School had one national winner and 12 state winners.

In the President's Physical Fitness Awards, 25 Jefferson Middle School students achieved 85% of the awards, 97 students achieved 50% of the awards.

Special Recognition

Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) and Gateway  Assessment

On the second grade TCAP Achievement Test, median national percentiles ranged from 64 (Total Mathematics) to 72 (Total Reading and Total Language). 

Eighty-six percent (86%) to ninety-seven percent (97%) of Oak Ridge students in grades 3-8 demonstrated performance levels in the Proficient to Advanced categories across all subjects and grade levels on the 2008 TCAP Achievement Test.

Oak Ridge students demonstrated superior performance on the Gateway assessments:  Sixty-nine percent (69%) performed at the Advanced level on the Mathematics assessment; eighty-six percent (86%) performed at the Advanced level on the Language Arts assessment, and eighty-seven percent (85%) performed at the Advanced level on of the Science assessment.

 

Staff

Dr. Peggy Bertrand, Science Teacher, won the 2007-08 Siemen's Award for Advanced Placement.

Ms. Theresa Holtzclaw: co-authored book regarding AP Biology.  She was also named Science Educator of the Year by the Tennessee Science Teachers Association.

Ms. Jane Sasser published a book of poetry and won 1st place in the Tennessee Writers Alliance.

Ms. Benita Albert, ORHS Math Teacher, was named to the USA Today 2007 All Teacher Team.  Ms. Albert was named Teacher of the month for Public Service online "Wired Science" Broadcast.

Dr. Nivedita Ganguly, ORHS Science Teacher testified before Congress on nanotechnology.

Ms. Cassandra Osborne, ORHS Social Studies teacher,  received the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Educational Excellence Award

 

The Pilot Club of Anderson County recognized Dr. Blanche Dresner as recipient of the Special Education Teacher of the Year.

SYSTEMWIDE

 

WILLOW BROOK ELEMENTARY

Willow Brook Elementary School received its second 21st Century Learning Grant in the amount of $82,000 from the Tennessee State Department of Education.  The grant will support a variety of after-school programs to extend learning opportunities.

Willow Brook Elementary School received a monetary award from CH2M Hill, Inc to help underwrite a unique math program called math Perspectives.

Willow Brook Elementary School received a monetary award from Krogers in the amount of $449.52 through its Kroger Earning Plus Learning Educational Incentive Program.  The funds were used to support Intersession Classes for students during Fall and Spring breaks.

Two Willow Brook 4th Grade students won "Best Use of Oak Ridge Award" and "Special Achievement Award" in the 2008 Secret City Student Film Festival.

WOODLAND ELEMENTARY

Woodland received two grants from the Oak Ridge Schools Public Education Foundation in the amounts of: 1) "Whiteboard Initiative (Mike Carvella); and 2) Barbara Krushkenski received a grant for "Literacy Library Organization".

LINDEN ELEMENTARY

Linden's First Lego League Team, The Linden Hydromasters, competed in the 2007 Tennessee FLL State Championship on December 1, 2007.  They placed 4th in Root Design out of 60 teams.  They ranked 8th in Robot performance, and were 9th in the overall rankings of the 60 teams.  They were the youngest team in the competition and their coaches, Linden Elementary teachers(sponsors) were pleased and impressed with the competition results but were even more excited and encouraged by the learning that took place.

GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY

Glenwood was the recipient of the Lottery for Education - Afterschool Programs (Leaps) in the amount of $140,000.

Glenwood students were winners in two local art contests - Freedom Bell Contest at the Corner Gallery, and the Oak Ridge Art Museum Spring Art Show.
